Probiotic Benefit for Skin
We often think of the microbiome being important in our gastrointestinal tract, but it also plays a role in skin health.39
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria, that can help us by stimulating the growth of “good” or helpful microorganism colonies for our bodies. Although it’s not entirely understood why, certain skin conditions and allergic responses can be linked to shifts in the microbiome.29,40 Experts believe there is a connection between beneficial microbes in the gastrointestinal system, the regulation of inflammation and allergic response, and the skin.29
There is great progress in the use of probiotics to help with skin health and wellness. Additionally, certain strains of probiotics are shown to help regulate allergic hypersensitivity29 and lower the risks of certain skin issues, like eczema.40
Targeted strains of probiotics considered useful for the skin include:
-
Lactobacillus casei:
produces trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide that assist in regulating the body’s microbiome for a healthy, comfortable balance , while also benefiting overall health, wellness, and immune function.32
-
Bifidobacterium longum:
produces short chain fatty acids that help with gastrointestinal, immunological, allergy, and infectious conditions, and reduce harmful bacteria to improve the microbial environment.41,42,43
-
Bifidobacterium lactis:
stimulates immune function while also helping modulate allergic responses.33
